Xerxes stood on the balcony of his... their apartment, a steaming mug of coffee in his hand, just staring out over the cityscape. Frost had come in the night to coat everything in a layer of frozen white. Musing to himself, he figured Maria would love it, and almost had the urge to reach out over their link to contact her, but stopped. He had a secret. a secret from them, his team, the only people he had ever known. It was, to him, a secret that he couldn't let them know, because they may come to take that secret away from him.
His secret had blue eyes, and was a red wolf sometimes, a human others, and a hulking beast out of ancient myths on rare occasions. He'd only seen the 9 foot beast known as the Crinos form a few times, but he knew it was formidable, but that wasn't what scared him. It wasn't why he felt his team would take the werewolf away from him if they knew...
it's because the werewolf was male, and he felt, somewhere, deep in his genetically engineered heart... love.
He always had a soft spot for animals, and when the wolf showed up one day, following him around, he couldn't just send it away. He wasn't built that way. He brought food with him on assignments, and fed the wolf, talked to it, and for the first time in his life, he felt he had a friend. Someone he could talk to, and someone he could confess his slowly blooming emotions to. In time he had brought the wolf back here, to his home, and shared his bed with the lupine, believing he had a new companion. But he wasn't surprised when he woke up the next morning, and the wolf had been a man instead.
He had felt... relieved. Relieved to know that the wolf could indeed understand him, to listen to him. He felt comfort in the fact that here was someone who knew what he did, had a good idea of who he was, and still followed him like the proverbial lost puppy. In more ways than one. He felt... oddly complete, to know that here was someone whom he could confide in, and who would listen, and love him anyway.
"It's cold out here this morning."
Jake, the Werewolf, leaned on the rail of the balcony beside him, his own steaming mug of coffee in a hand that made Xerxes' own look small by comparison. He was bundled up in a red, terry cloth bathrobe, and looked like he had just crawled out of bed himself. clouds of hot breath became thicker as he took a long swallow of the hot coffee, then took a sidelong glance at Xerxes.
"You're forgetting to breathe again. Don't want someone to mistake ya for a walkin corpse, do ya?"
a cloud of hot breath exited Xerxes' mouth before he took another sip of his coffee.
"thank you."
Jake tilted his head as he looked at Xerxes, a decidedly canine expression, though the sniper wouldn't tell him that.
"thankin me? for what?"
"for helping me be more human."
Jake's face blossomed into a grin as he slid over and wrapped a huge arm around the much shorter Biogene, pulling Xerxes close to him, hugging tightly. Xerxes couldn't quite pin what it was. He was male. Jake was too. He wasn't supposed to feel like this toward another male, and yet he did. Was it because he had first met Jake when he was a wolf? Or was it when he did find out that Jake was a werewolf, that he was just so happy that someone seemed so devoted to him, that he just felt... secure?
His thoughts started to swirl as he continued to be in Jake's embrace, until he registered movement. Jake was carrying him inside. He big man sat on the couch with him, letting Xerxes lean against him and just be lost in his thoughts. He needed to be sure, though.
"I'm a soldier, Jake. I was built to fight a war that most of the world doesn't even know exist. I'm supposed to be strong, infallible, and here I am... You've become my weakness. I had something missing in my life, if you can even call it that... When you came along, I realized what I was missing, and now... I don't ever want to be without it again. No matter what."
Instead of smacking him upside the head for talking like that, Jake did the most unexpected thing to Xerxes. He hugged him tightly and held him close. His voice, a rich baritone, started so deep in his chest, that Xerxes could feel it more than he could hear it.
"Little man, when are you gonna see that I'm fighting to protect the same world as you? if I'm your weakness, then... You're mine. I'd die to protect you, and if I have to face the Wyrm itself to save you so you could keep fighting to save humanity... I would. Don't worry about me none. I'm out to watch your back... and you can watch mine."
Xerxes laid there, just listening to the beat of the werewolf's heart for a long moment. He'd lived a life where even though he was part of a team, he was alone. And now... He'd fallen in love with a dog, who had turned out to be a man. ...and that feeling hadn't changed. Slowly, his arms slid around Jake's torso, hugging him tight. As he did, Jake's arms slid around him and it wasn't so much as a hug, as the large man was... holding him.
He didn't feel so alone anymore.
